Much like skinny jeans and tie-dye, marketing channels tend to cycle in and out of style based on the audience’s changing tastes. The same goes for direct mail marketing. Though direct mail marketing may sound old school to some, it has its own set of advantages that can significantly impact businesses.
In the present climate, most baby boomers might not have a positive impression of direct mail marketing, but millennials and Gen Z consumers are most likely to receive direct mail.
The reason is that digital fatigue has led younger consumers to crave the tactile, tangible experience of handling a direct mail piece. The other reason is the hybrid work culture. Today, about 26 percent of Americans work from home, and this number is likely to grow continually in the future as well. Since more people work at home, they are more people attuned to the home mailbox, which translates to higher open rates and response rates.
As direct mail marketing delivers specifically tailored and relevant experiences, consumers are more receptive to it. And personalization in today’s era is mail that is composed and designed to speak to the needs, tastes, and concerns of the recipient instead of just writing their names. This includes offers and messages unique to the individual consumer, images, colors, and layouts reflecting the consumer’s known interests, and personalized landing pages that warmly greet the consumer and deepen the relationship.
Marketers can implement this level of personalization to direct mail using data analytics and digital printing technology. They can use consumers’ purchase history, demographic information, tax records, and other data sources to develop messages to elicit a positive response from recipients. Using digital printing technology, marketers can even print a mailpiece that incorporates these elements in a way that communicates with the consumer as an individual.
In essence, direct mail has a higher response rate than purely digital channels. The key to success is using personalization to drive authentic human interaction and achieving an instant uptick in results.
